Official Nintendo Switch Megathread

Postby FinalSmash » 13 Jan 2017, 18:39

What did you all think of the presentation? The hardware itself looks pretty cool; I especially am interested in HD Rumble.

Software looks decent, at least they have a lot of stuff coming soon/for launch as opposed to the Wii U. I am worried about some of the games, mainly Super Mario Oddessy(he goes to NY...), Zelda Breath of the Wild(voice acting), and Xenoblade Chronicles 2(chibi art style and direct successor to a game with a perfect ending)

Xenoblade Chronicles X was released on the WiiU so I'm not too concerned, although I haven't played X since I never bought a WiiU (due to the lack of games).
I think Super Mario Odyssey looks good, it has places other than NY, and they mentioned it being similar to Sunshine, instead of Galaxy, so it might not be the normal type of Mario game, who knows.
Breath of the Wild looks fantastic! I'm wondering why the Master Sword is called the Master Sword of Resurrection though.

I'm also glad they said it's region free.
The price looks alright too, a bit under 500 AUD at a major game store nearby, that's 30 less than the PS4 on release date and 130 less than the Xbox One on release date here, but I've read people complaining about the price, oddly enough.

I'm very disappointed to hear that we'll have to pay for online now...

Gamestop said that you can play pokemon on it, but it was never confirmed if they meant Virtual Console or not.

All in all, it looks great! I'm planning on waiting a week from release to see how popular it is so I can guess if the price will drop or there will be enough games to make it worth purchasing immediately. Shame about online play being replaced with online pay though....

I'd give the event 60%. It was exciting, certainly, the release date/price were good news and a lot of games were shown off but there wasn't much actual information about the games. There was information about the console, sure, but motion controls and 'HD rumble' won't sell units - games make or break a console.

Super Mario Odyssey looks like the Mario game we've been asking for since Galaxy. Expansive, colourful worlds and a simple new feature (cap throwing/mechanics) that opens up a lot of new gameplay opportunities. Mario showing up in a modern city was... eye-catching, certainly, but I suspect that, in context, it will just be another weird world.

Zelda Breath of the Wild is... umm, still there. Almost nothing was actually shown in the presentation, but it's still there and will release with the console, which is certainly good news! The voice acting is different and a break from tradition but there's no reason it can't serve the game well.

Xenoblade 2 was announced and, like a lot of the games in the presentation, we know almost nothing about it. Xenoblade Chronicles was an excellent game and worked well as a self-contained story - the new one could honour it, desecrate it or, as I personally suspect, be a completely different story sharing only the Xenoblade name. Monolith Soft have never, as far as I know, made a direct sequel to any of their games, despite them all sharing the Xeno- title.

I don't think there's anything from the presentation worth getting worked up over. We know almost nothing right now, so let's wait for some more information and for the 3rd of March.

I'm very pleased that region locking is gone now.

A subscription-based online service is extremely disappointing. I have 3 Wii U friends, and the only games I've played online with them are Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8, and Splatoon. I don't think I would play online enough to warrant paying. And the "incentive" is 1 free game(assuming a virtual console game)that you can play for 1 month, and it changes every month. The problem is the game is only playable for its specific month unless you buy it.

Gameplay wise Odyssey looks spectacular.

I'm excited for BotW. Not a huge fan of the voice acting but that won't deter me from playing. The game looks fantastic.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 worries me because, yes, none of the games in the series have shared stories or characters, but none of them have shared the same name. It appears the Monado is back, albeit different, and a female apparently. The art style really gets on my nerves because it's happier and brighter than even the first game. Also, X ended on a gigantic cliffhanger, so it would've been nice to have that resolved, but I suppose we'll just have to wait for that.

Just gave in and preordered along with Breath of the Wild.
I'm really excited and hope that it brings Nintendo back to the old days of glory.

Nintendo released a video today with information on the hardware, does anyone know if they gave new info with it? I'm pretty sure I've heard it all before.

Yeah, nothing new, just more of an overview. We still don't have specifics on the processing power, but taking into account Nintendo's current philosphy on graphics, the gameplay footage we've seen, and the fact that the console must be able to be played on the go, I'd put it at weaker than the Xbox One.

I'm happy with the quality everything appears to be, and the console is 1080p docked and 720p undocked with more DPI than the Vita, which looks really clean.

I haven't seen any videos of one switch doing 4 player splitscreen, so that's my main concern.

The price is quite high too, I've preordered only 2 games (BOTW and 1-2 Switch) and at the moment the cost is $800 AUD due to accessories etc. I ordered another Joycon pair ($120 AUD) and the straps aren't sold in Neon, so I had to order 2 pairs ($30 AUD each pair) to have the colours match.

I've preordered the BOTW earphones, carry case and stickers as well, so I'm looking forward to them.

I am disappointed at paid online play and that DLC for BOTW will cost, but I'm willing to pay for the extra benefits, although I think I've paid the cost of BOTW in themed products now, but that's my choice.

Yeah if they don't have 4-player splitscreen and their multiplayer philosophy is dependent upon people bringing their switches to others' houses, that's pretty bad.

I don't have a problem with the price on the console or the games. It's the accessories. Buying more Joy Cons and the Pro Controller is outrageous at the current prices.

I was really disappointed when they announced that online was going to be paid. That and the fact that the "free" games they offer with the subscription are only free for the month, but they've said that it'll cost about $20 a year, which I think is very reasonable.

That's surprisingly good pricing, I'm happy to pay that, especially if it keeps online going for as long as people pay (I miss online on the DS).
Definitely going to have 4 player split screen. I wasn't sure if you could pair 4 controllers, but as you can see
Spoiler: show
Image
it has 4 lights on either side, that would represent 4 joycon left and 4 right, so theoretically up to 8 players on one console (good for games like bomberman). The only charging docks I can find in AUS support 4 joycon max though, so some people may need 2.

Picked up my switch at the midnight launch, loving it so far!
Going to spend the day playing BOTW.

It's cost a lot for everything to go with botw, the 5 amiibos (couldn't justify buying all of the 30th anniversary ones) and the DLC, together they cost over $150 aud (or $113 us) which is more than the game itself..

My friend got BOTW yesterday for his Wii U and has been playing it non-stop.

It's amazing! I only have 5 hearts so far, but I've been playing it from when I wake up until I sleep.
I am finding the enemies (especially Lizalfos) very difficult though, and when they gang up on me I'm guaranteed to die.
I've killed 2 stone talus minibosses, but it's taken forever because I only used bombs, and kept blowing myself up.
I keep breaking my weapons and shields, so I'm afraid to use some of them (such as an axe that deals around 50 damage), I wish I could buy weapons or craft them.
If anyone has any tips, tricks or anything else that would help (spoiler free, of course!) I'd love to hear about it!

Should we start a topic for BOTW, or possibly use the Telegram group?
